Aces High: An Interview with DPS Hee-Dong “Guard” Lee

When the London Spitfire announced they were signing Guard as the teams newest DPS player joining Birdring and Profit this off season, most people expect him to be playing a supportive role as the team’s third DPS. Guard formerly of Element Mystic from Contenders Korea, has come into the Overwatch League and shown that there’s more to his play than just his famed Sombra and Tracer and when he was introduced into the starting line up in place of Birdring after an 0-2 start, he gave the team another weapon to utilise in his ability to Sombra in Goats and adapt to the team needs on the likes of Brigitte. London have gone on to win 3 of the 4 full games that Guard has played in and now look set to going forward with him in the starting line up.

Aces High is a series that attempts to connect the London Spitfire to the fans by providing information and interviews from the team so that you can get to know who they are that little bit further. This is this episode eight of the series and the first of the 2019 season. Throughout the season, we will be looking to prove you with a little more insight as to into the London Spitfire players. If you want to read any of the previous interviews, then follow the Aces High link for more content.

For the London fans who many not know a lot about you, tell us one thing about yourself we wouldn’t know?

I want to let them know that I'm the kind of player that focuses most on team play.

What was it like knowing you’ll be coming in to the Overwatch League and how did you think it was going to be like compared to Contenders Korea?

I've been dreaming of the day I'd get to join the League, and was incredibly excited to learn that I've been picked up by Spitfire - especially because they were the champions of the inaugural season.
I don't think this kind of opportunity comes often, and want to be able to make the best of this one. There are a lot of players in Contenders KR that are mechanically amazing. The thing about the League that surprised me the most was the intricate strategies, such as analysing the opponent players' favourite positions. It's those little things that make a huge difference.

With London coming into the season as the defending champions. What was your expectations coming into the season?

I believe this team can definitely win again. I joined this team with the intention of creating a very well meshed team that can bolster the weaknesses that it may come across in the long run.

Achilios selected you as his rookie of the year. What were your thoughts on that, do you feel that you can win that title and who would be your biggest competition for it?

Thank you so much for picking me as a potential Rookie of the Split. I will do my best to make that choice come to fruition. I also believe that Krillin can easily qualify for the same award.

Your known for having arguably the best Sombra in the league, yet you seemed to have learnt Brigitte very quickly at a high level. How are you finding the heroes in the current meta?

Sombra is a hero that has the potential to break Goats. Because Brigitte and Sombra tend to take the lead in team fights, I think they both are incredibly important positions.

Which player and team are you looking forward to playing the most?

I am personally most looking forward to facing Jecse of Seoul Dynasty.

For London’s fans who are looking to buy jerseys this season. Give us some reasons as to why they should buy yours?

I think the name "Guard" is quite a nice name to go along with the number 10 when written on the back of a jersey. But then again, any player that does well will make that name and number look nice. I'll do my best to make my jersey a proud possession.

The Spitfire will play their last game and possibly their most important game of stage one, against rivals Seoul Dynasty on Saturday 16th March at 20:30 GMT. Make sure you see Guard and his Sombra take on former teammate Jecse, as they battle it out for one of the few remaining playoff spots in the stage. Thank you to Guard and The London Spitfire for the interview
