Looking back from the start of the Overwatch League to being at the mid-way point of stage three, there has been one hero that has been a must pick in every composition so far. D.Va! With the ability switch from attack to defence with ease and with how influential she can be with a well-placed Self-Destruct Ultimate or a well-timed Defence Matix to eat up an ultimate, having a player on your team who can play her well is a key component for any team in OWL right now. Luckily for the Spitfire they have one of the best D.Va players in the league in former GC Busan player Seung-Hyun “WooHyaL” Sung.
The Aces High interviews are a series that attempts to connect the London Spitfire to the fans, by providing information and interviews from the team so that you can get to know them that little bit better. As the season continues to roll on, the interviews do too and today’s with one of the best (If not the best in my opinion) D.Va players in the league and a Spitfire fan favourite in WooHyaL. A member of the GC Busan team that won APEX Season Four, WooHyaL had a slow start to life in the league after an adaptation period and due to the play of fellow Off-Tank Jun-Ho “Fury” Kim. WooHyaL has since become a vital part of the team after mixing time with Fury but also being the player the team call on when they need to be settled, WooHyaL’s known for his attempts to set the pace and style of play and Ranks as the second best D.Va player according to Winstons Lab, despite having played half the amount of time to any other player starting D.Va player.
Hi WooHyaL, thank you for taking the time to answer some questions. In my opinion yourself and Gesture are the best tank line in the Overwatch League. I know that you both played for GC Busan but what in your opinion makes you two work so well together?
I personally think that we think alike, which makes it possible for us to become a strong tank duo. There are many talented Winston players in the league, but Gesture knows how to make good decisions in clutch moments.
Now that you’ve played each team a couple of times, Which team do you like playing against the most and who gives you the biggest challenge?
I suppose going against Seoul is the most fun. They are a team that we have been facing against since Apex, and yet over the 4 matches we've had, we have yet to let them have a single set score. A team that is difficult to go against is Houston Outlaws. The Outlaws employ a systematic defensive strategy that counters our specialty in offense very well, making them a very difficult team for us to go against.
The Spitfire won stage one and came third in stage two. How do you see stage three going for the team?
Unfortunately, we were eliminated rather quickly from the stage 2 title match, but in stage 3, hopefully we'll be able to win the whole thing.
Both yourself and Fury play D.Va to a top 5 level and have been sharing time due to this. What’s the difference between your styles of play?
The biggest difference between me and Fury is reactive versus proactive. Fury is amazing as D.Va in making supporting plays for the team and reacting quickly and properly to the opponents' gameplay, while I think I build atmosphere and lead fights with more aggressive moves.
If you weren’t allowed to play off-tank any more and had to pick another position, where would you play and what hero would you choose?
If I were to play a different position, it would likely be sub-healer, either Zenyatta or Ana. This is because I have a good understanding of defensive positioning, and the sub-healer position also utilises the habit of checking the opponents' positions on the map, much like D.Va players do.
You seemed to have taken to the teams media presence in the 7 minutes video, the Spitfire responds and the Logitech adverts. What’s been your favourite moment doing them so far?
The Logitech advertisement shoot comes to mind, since it was hilarious even to me as I was being filmed.
Although I’m an Xbox noob, I’m a D.Va main. What’s the one tip you would give me to improve?
D.Va is a cute yet destructive robot. As for play tips. try to use Matrix when our team is getting hard engaged on, otherwise focus on beating opponents with your unlimited rounds, and swoosh over your body when you have ult towards where the opponents congregate.
Finally, I’m still looking to get myself a Spitfire jersey, why should I buy yours?
You will not regret buying my uniform since you'll have the league's best sub-tank's name embroidered upon it.
We enter week three of stage three this week and while the Spitfire may be 1-3 for the stage, they have every chance of turning their record around to 3-3 with difficult but not impossible games against the Boston Uprising and the Los Angeles Valiant. Both of which should be highly entertaining games to watch.
